Luxury cigar lighters: the great houses and torch alternatives

What really makes a fine lighter valuable, and how to choose the one that will light your cigars for years to come.

A luxury lighter is judged by two things: the quality of the flame it produces and the care given to the object itself. For the amateur, it is not merely a matter of aesthetics, as a cigar must be relit several times and requires a clean heat, free from odor or residue. Before comparing the great houses and torch models, remember the essentials: a butane gas lighter, whether with a soft flame or a jet, is the only serious foundation. To see what this family of objects looks like, browse our selection of cigar lighters, then return here to understand what justifies, or does not, the price difference between two models.

Two schools of lighting: the soft flame of traditional lighters and the butane torch of jet lighters.

What is a luxury cigar lighter?

A luxury lighter is one whose value lies as much in its craftsmanship as in its function: hand-worked metal, lacquer, guilloché, a repairable mechanism, and after-sales service capable of making it last for several decades. It is therefore not a simple disposable object dressed in a pretty shell.

For the cigar smoker, this definition must be supplemented by a practical requirement. The foot of a cigar presents a wide surface, often 15 to 24 mm in diameter, which must be toasted regularly before taking the first puffs. A magnificent lighter that produces a weak flame, sensitive to the slightest draft or laden with odors does not do the tobacco any favors. Here, luxury is first and foremost a mastered flame.

Why does a luxury lighter cost so much?

The price of a lighter from a great house reflects the manufacturing time, the materials (solid brass, gold or palladium plating, natural lacquer), the number of inspection operations, and the guarantee of possible repair years later. Added to this is the value of the signature: you are also paying for a history, a recognizable design, and the promise of an object that can be passed down. None of this makes the lighting better in itself, but all of it makes the object more durable and more desirable.

Good to know A valuable lighter is almost never petrol-powered for cigar use: petrol leaves a taste that transfers to the tobacco. The great houses, moreover, offer the majority of their "cigar" models in butane gas.

Luxury lighters: the great houses, cultural touchstones

A few names come up as soon as luxury lighters are mentioned. We mention them here as cultural touchstones, to understand where the aesthetics of many current lighters come from: these houses are not distributed by Atelier Atypique, and none of their products are sold on our site.

S.T. Dupont, the Parisian emblem

Founded in Paris in 1872, the house of S.T. Dupont first made its name with travel leather goods before becoming, in the 20th century, one of the global references for luxury lighters. Its models are recognizable by their rectangular shape, their lacquer and precious metal finishes, and above all by the clear sound produced by the opening of the cap, which has become a true signature. This is why the "Dupont lighter" is often spoken of as an object apart: it is chosen for the gesture as much as for the flame.

The English houses and the gentleman's lighter

London gave the pocket lighter several models that became classics, particularly from the 1920s onward, with mechanisms that allowed them to be opened and lit with one hand. Later, the arrival of refillable butane gas fixed the silhouette of the evening lighter: slim, heavy in the hand, and designed for a jacket pocket.

The American storm lighter

In contrast to Parisian refinement, the American storm lighter, which appeared in the 1930s, established sturdiness as a form of elegance. Running on petrol, it is better suited to a cigarette than a cigar, but it has deeply marked the imagination of the lighter that one keeps for a lifetime.

These houses have the soft, yellow, dancing flame in common, which is brought close to the foot of the cigar without touching it. It is perfectly suited for patient lighting indoors. It shows its limits, however, on a terrace, on a golf course, or in the mountains: that is where the torch comes in.

Soft flame or torch: which luxury lighter for a cigar?

For a cigar, the butane torch is the most practical for everyday use, while the soft flame remains the most traditional. The torch produces a blue, pressurized flame that reaches a high temperature without smoke or odor and resists the wind much better. The soft flame, being slower, allows for a very gradual toasting and a more contemplative ritual.

We have devoted a complete article to this question, to be read if you are still hesitating: torch or soft flame, the art of lighting. Above all, remember this: with a torch, you keep a distance of a few centimeters and turn the cigar, to heat without burning the wrapper.

How to choose a luxury lighter: the criteria that really matter

To choose well, look first at the flame, then at the mechanism, then at the object. The order matters: a very beautiful lighter that is unsuitable for cigars will end up in a drawer. To go further, our guide on the 7 criteria for choosing the perfect cigar lighter details each point.

1. The flame and its adjustment

An intensity adjustment dial is essential: it allows you to adapt the flame to the caliber of the cigar and the environment. For a large module, a triple torch heats the foot more evenly than a single torch.

2. The lighting system

Piezoelectric, triggered by a button, is the most widespread on torches. Flint and wheel lighting, which is older, offers a mechanical gesture appreciated by enthusiasts and works without electronic components.

3. The weight and grip

A quality lighter has density. Solid metal or well-machined metal alloy gives a feeling of solidity that is not found in a plastic casing, and it withstands the shocks of everyday life better.

4. The integrated accessories

The retractable punch, housed in the body of the lighter, is the most useful innovation of the last generation: it allows you to pierce the head of the cigar without taking out a second tool. For a clean guillotine cut, a cigar cutter remains, however, the natural complement.

5. The finish and durability

Guilloché, brushed finish, lacquer, or matte black: choose a finish that will age well in the pocket. Textured surfaces show fewer fingerprints than mirror surfaces.

The workshop's opinion

If you dream of the look of a lighter from a great house but you often smoke outdoors, we advise you to start from the use rather than the name. Three models from our collection of cigar torch lighters illustrate the possible choices well:

  • HOUDINI: triple torch with intensity dial and retractable punch, in a pocket format of 8 × 2.8 × 2.2 cm, offered in five finishes. This is our recommendation for large calibers and outdoors.
  • VARGAS: torch with piezo lighting, retractable punch, metal alloy body of 7.8 × 4.4 × 1.5 cm, in brushed silver or gold yellow. Its flat shape easily slips into an inner pocket.
  • GAMBIT: torch with flint lighting by mechanical wheel, guilloché metal body of 6.5 × 3.5 × 1.4 cm, spare flint provided, in black or yellow. The most compact of the three, for those who like the mechanical gesture of lighters from yesteryear.

All three are refilled with standard butane gas and are delivered without gas, as required by transport regulations: plan for a cartridge for the first use.

Tip Choose the finish depending on your case or your humidor: a matte black lighter pairs well with black leather or carbon fiber, a gold yellow finish matches brass accents and wood.

Caring for a luxury lighter so it lasts

A valuable lighter lasts much longer with simple and regular maintenance. Most failures come from poor-quality gas or a poorly done refill, rarely from the mechanism itself.

Correctly refilling a gas lighter

1
Purge the reservoir. With the lighter upside down, press the valve with a small tool to evacuate the air and residual gas, away from any flame.
2
Use refined butane. A several-times filtered gas limits the impurities that clog the nozzles, especially on torches.
3
Fill in short bursts. Vertical cartridge above the valve, two or three presses of a few seconds are enough.
4
Let it rest. Wait a few minutes for the gas to return to room temperature before lighting, then adjust the flame.

For a more complete guide on the maintenance of all your tools, from the humidor to the cigar cutter, consult our article dedicated to the maintenance of accessories. Also remember to wipe the body with a soft and dry cloth, and never store your lighter in direct sunlight or in a car in the summer.

Attention On a plane, refill cartridges are prohibited in the cabin as well as in the hold. A lighter can generally travel on you, at a rate of one per passenger, never in checked baggage: always check your airline's rules before departure.

How to recognize an authentic luxury lighter?

An authentic lighter from a great house bears an engraved serial number, is sold with its box and its documents, and is distributed through a network of authorized retailers. Beware of abnormally low prices, irregular engravings, and caps that do not produce the expected sound. For second-hand items, always ask for an original invoice or a visit to the house's after-sales service.

Giving a lighter to a cigar enthusiast

The lighter is one of the most personal gifts you can give to a cigar smoker: it accompanies them at every tasting. For a complete gift, pair it with a matching cigar cutter, or choose a boxed version. Our lighters are delivered in their box, ready to give, with free shipping.

Frequently asked questions about the luxury lighter

Which luxury lighter to choose for smoking a cigar?
To smoke a cigar, choose a butane gas lighter, with an adjustable flame. If you smoke mostly indoors and appreciate the ritual, a beautiful soft flame is ideal. If you often smoke outdoors or large-caliber cigars, a torch, single or triple, will be more effective. Avoid petrol, whose odor transfers to the tobacco.
Is a Dupont lighter suitable for cigars?
Yes, the house offers models designed for cigars, with a soft flame or torch depending on the lines. The soft flame requires a slower lighting and shelter from the wind. We mention this brand as a reference: it is not sold on Atelier Atypique.
Why is a luxury lighter so expensive?
Its price reflects the materials (solid metal, precious plating, lacquer), the manufacturing time, the quality controls, and the possibility of having it repaired for decades. The house's signature and the value of transmission also count. The quality of the flame, however, can be achieved by a good torch lighter that is much less expensive.
Torch lighter or soft flame: which one damages the cigar the least?
The soft flame is the most delicate, because it heats slowly. A well-used torch does not damage the cigar for that reason either: it is enough to keep a distance of a few centimeters and turn the foot to toast it, without letting the flame touch the wrapper.
What gas to use in a luxury lighter?
Use refined butane, several times filtered, compatible with the valve of your lighter. Poor-quality gases contain impurities that clog the nozzles, especially on torches. Purge the reservoir before each refill to avoid mixtures of air and gas.
How to know if a second-hand luxury lighter is authentic?
Check for the presence of an engraved serial number, the quality of the engravings, the box, and the original documents. Compare the weight and the opening sound with a known model. In case of doubt, the house's after-sales service can generally confirm the authenticity and revise the object.
Can you take a cigar lighter on a plane?
Generally, a lighter can travel on you in the cabin, at a rate of one per passenger, but never in the hold. Gas refill cartridges are prohibited in all baggage. The rules vary depending on the airlines and countries: find out before each trip.
