How to Refill a Cigar Lighter Guide

Just received your Atelier Atypique torch lighter and want to enjoy it as soon as possible? For safety reasons, all our torch lighters are shipped empty of gas—the first step before being able to light your cigar is therefore the refill. Equipment needed to refill your cigar lighter

Before starting, gather the two essential items:

🔵
Premium butane gas refill
Choose a triple-distilled or "zero impurity" marked gas. Premium butane prevents nozzle clogging and extends the lifespan of your torch. Cigar lighters operate with butane, not lighter fluid.
🔧
Small flathead screwdriver or ballpoint pen
Used to press the filling valve when purging residual air—a necessary step before every refill.

Important: never use gas intended for stoves, camping cartridges, or disposable BIC-style lighters—these gases contain impurities that will quickly clog the fine nozzles of a torch lighter and reduce flame precision.

Step 1 — Purge the lighter before refilling

Even before thinking about filling your lighter with gas, you must ensure the tank is completely empty—both of residual gas and, more importantly, accumulated air.

Why this purge is essential

Over time and with successive refills, air can accumulate in the tank of your single or triple torch lighter. This air blocks the contact between the liquid gas and the ignition nozzle, causing the most common failure in torch lighters: capricious ignition, a weak flame, or no flame at all despite a full tank.

This is one of the easiest repairs to perform yourself—no need to send your lighter back or replace it. Purging before each refill prevents 90% of failures.

How to perform the purge — step-by-step procedure

  1. Get a ballpoint pen, a small screwdriver, or a pointed knife
  2. Turn the lighter upside down
  3. Firmly press the filling valve located on the bottom of the lighter for 5 to 10 seconds
  4. You should hear a slight hissing sound: this is the air escaping
  5. Repeat the operation until there is no more gas or air noise

Step 2 — Refill your lighter with butane gas

Once the purge is complete, you can proceed with the actual refill.

  1. Shake the gas refill before use—a few seconds are enough
  2. Position your lighter upside down, bottom facing up, held firmly
  3. Place the cartridge tip perpendicularly onto the filling valve and push down firmly
  4. Maintain pressure for about 5 seconds, then release
  5. Repeat the operation 2 to 3 times to ensure a full refill
  6. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the gas to return to room temperature—liquid butane is cold and can temporarily affect ignition
  7. Adjust the flame intensity to the desired height using the adjustment wheel
  8. Light your lighter—the blue flame should be stable and directional

If the flame is still missing or too weak after refilling, repeat the procedure from the purge. In the vast majority of cases, air remains in the tank.

Tip: if you hear a persistent hissing sound or see leaks during filling, the refill tip is not properly positioned in the valve, or its diameter is not suitable. Try with another adapter tip provided with the cartridge.

Safety precautions to observe

Butane is a flammable gas—a few basic rules allow you to refill with complete peace of mind, in compliance with current safety standards.

  1. Wait until the lighter is completely cold—never refill immediately after use. Wait at least 10 minutes after the last ignition.
  2. Set the flame intensity to the minimum before refilling, using the screw or wheel next to the valve.
  3. Keep the lighter away from your face throughout the procedure.
  4. Always refill upside down, with both the lighter and cartridge in the same position.
  5. Work in a ventilated area, away from any heat source or open flame.
  6. Do not smoke while refilling and keep any object that could produce a spark away.

How often should you refill your cigar lighter?

This depends directly on your usage and the model. Triple-torch or flat-flame lighters naturally consume more gas than a single-torch model.

🗓️
Occasional smoker
1-2 months
1 to 2 cigars per week
📅
Regular smoker
2-4 weeks
3 to 5 cigars per week
🔥
Daily aficionado
2-3 weeks
Daily use — triple torch

Visible gas gauge: lighters equipped with translucent reinforced glass on the tank allow you to check the level at a glance—a particularly practical feature for anticipating the next refill before a trip. Browse our range of lighters with a visible gauge.

Extend the lifespan of your torch lighter

Beyond the refilling procedure, a few simple habits help preserve your lighter over time:

⭐
Premium triple-distilled butane
Cheap gas accelerates nozzle clogging and reduces flame precision—invest in quality butane.
🧹
Regular nozzle cleaning
Use a dry cotton swab to remove combustion residues around the nozzle—do this every month.
🌡️
Store away from heat
Avoid direct exposure to sun, heat, and humidity—liquid butane expands at high temperatures.
🛡️
Avoid impacts on the valve
An impact on the filling valve can cause a permanent leak—protect your lighter in a cigar case.
🔄
Systematic purge before refilling
This 30-second action prevents 90% of failures—never skip this step, even if the lighter seems empty.
📦
Keep out of reach
Store the lighter and cartridges in a dry, ventilated place out of reach of children.

Choosing the right cigar lighter model

Now that you have mastered refilling, the next step is to find the model that suits your habits. Also, remember to pair your lighter with a Spanish cedar cigar humidor to keep your cigars in the best conditions between tastings, and a cigar cutter suited to the ring gauge of your favorite smokes.

For demanding enthusiasts, our gift sets bring together the best accessories in an elegant presentation—ideal for gifting.

FAQ — Refilling a cigar lighter

What gas should be used to refill a cigar lighter?
Only premium triple-distilled butane gas, marked "zero impurity." Cheap gas intended for disposable lighters or camping cartridges contains impurities that quickly clog the fine nozzles of a torch lighter and reduce flame precision.
Why purge the lighter before refilling?
Air accumulates gradually in the tank and blocks the contact between the liquid gas and the ignition nozzle. This accumulation causes the most common failure in torch lighters: a weak or missing flame despite a full tank. Purging before every refill prevents 90% of failures.
Why doesn't my lighter work after refilling?
In the vast majority of cases, air remains in the tank. Repeat the procedure from the purge, pressing the valve for longer. Also wait 2 to 3 minutes after refilling—liquid butane is cold and can temporarily affect ignition.
How often should you refill a torch lighter?
It depends on usage. An occasional smoker can go 1 to 2 months. A regular smoker, 2 to 4 weeks. A daily aficionado will need to refill every 2 to 3 weeks. Triple torches and flat flames consume more than single torches.
Can you travel by plane with a refillable lighter?
Yes, under certain conditions. Most airlines allow one empty butane lighter in carry-on luggage (only one per passenger). Empty the tank before boarding and refill it at your destination. Always check your airline's rules before traveling.
How many torches are needed to light a Churchill or a Gordo?
For large gauges (Churchill ring gauge 47, Toro ring gauge 54, Gordo ring gauge 60), a triple torch or double jet lighter is recommended to ensure an even and quick light of the large foot surface. A single torch requires more time and rotation for an identical result. Check out our range of cigar lighters.
