Spanish cedar: why it's irreplaceable in a humidor

Spanish cedar is the reference wood for all premium humidors due to three complementary properties. Its hygroscopic cellular structure allows it to absorb excess humidity when the level rises too high, then release it when it drops — acting as a natural buffer in addition to the humidifier.

Its aromatic terpenes gradually diffuse into cigars stored in contact with the wood, enriching their flavor profile over time — this is why a cigar kept for a few weeks in a good cedar humidor reveals itself differently than when fresh out of the box. Finally, its characteristic scent naturally repels the tobacco beetle, the main pest for cigar collections. The Orbis Vault incorporates Spanish cedar throughout its interior structure.

Why gel instead of sponge? Gel bead humidifiers release humidity more slowly and consistently than traditional sponges — fewer peaks, less risk of over-humidification. The Orbis Vault's 3-way system with a slider allows for precise adjustment of the opening based on ambient room conditions.

Capacity 20 to 35 cigars: the range depends on the ring gauge. Robustos (50 ring gauge) or Coronas (42 ring gauge) allow up to 35 to be stored. Gordos (60 ring gauge) or Churchills (178 mm) reduce the capacity to around 20. The included adjustable divider allows compartmentalization by format or origin.

Distilled water only to refill the humidifier and for seasoning. Tap water contains minerals that accumulate in the gel beads and reduce their effectiveness. A dropper is included in the box.

Seasoning recommended upon receipt: refill the humidifier with distilled water, close the empty humidor, and wait 24 to 48 hours for the hygrometer to stabilize between 65% and 72%. New cedar first absorbs humidity before regulating it — without this step, it would draw moisture from your cigars rather than diffusing it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Boveda or Integra Boost packets be used in the Orbis Vault?
Yes — the Orbis Vault is fully compatible with Boveda 69% or 72% packets, Integra Boost, and all traditional humidifiers. For long-term storage or if you smoke infrequently, Boveda packets are an excellent alternative to the included gel humidifier — more precise and hands-off.
Is the Orbis Vault ready to use upon receipt?
Yes, but we recommend a seasoning step before placing your cigars: refill the humidifier with distilled water, close the empty humidor, and wait 24 to 48 hours for the hygrometer to stabilize. New cedar first absorbs humidity before regulating it — without this step, it would draw moisture from your cigars rather than diffusing it.
What are the 33 and 52 ring gauges for?
These two rings engraved in the lid allow you to quickly identify the ring gauge of your cigars by sliding them into the corresponding ring. The 33 ring identifies slender formats (Lancero, Panatela), while the 52 ring identifies wider formats (Robusto, Toro). Useful for sorting and organizing your cigars correctly by size within the humidor.
What is the target humidity in the Orbis Vault?
The ideal humidity for cigar storage is between 65% and 72%. The Orbis Vault's digital hygrometer displays the current level in real-time — visible through the glass lid without opening the humidor. If the level drops below 65%, refill the humidifier with distilled water only.
How many cigars can the Orbis Vault really hold?
Between 20 and 35 cigars depending on the formats. Coronas (42 ring gauge) allow up to 35 to be stored. Gordos (60 ring gauge) or large Churchills (178 mm) reduce the capacity to around 20. The included adjustable divider allows you to create compartments to organize by format, brand, or aging stage.
Onyx or Natural — which finish to choose?
The Onyx (black wood) is more contemporary and contrasts more with the glass — ideal for a modern office or design interior. The Natural (light wood) is more classic and warm — it evokes the aesthetic of traditional humidors and blends with all interiors. The quality of preservation is identical in both finishes.
Is the Orbis Vault a good gift for a cigar enthusiast?
It is one of the most complete gifts in the catalog — digital hygrometer, gel humidifier, accessory drawer, ring gauges, Spanish cedar, all included. Nothing to buy separately. Paired with a cigar cutter to store in the integrated drawer, it's a turnkey cigar gift for a birthday, Father's Day, or retirement.
