Everything you need to know

Solid wood DIY kit There are items you buy, and others you assemble before you adopt them. This Nixie-effect clock belongs to the second family: you receive a solid wood base and six transparent tubes to install yourself—it only takes a few minutes, and a small screwdriver is included. Once plugged in, each tube lights up with a digit suspended in the transparency, initially in a warm orange reminiscent of 1960s gas displays, then, if you wish, in a multicolored RGB palette. Three functions share the display: time, date, and a timer. A real-time clock (RTC) chip ensures precise timekeeping. Compact (23.7 cm long, 385 g), USB-powered, with no high voltage or batteries to change, it fits perfectly on a desk, a bookshelf, or next to a vinyl turntable. The name FILAMENT says it all: a thread of light, a simple assembly, an object you can watch come to life.

Nixie effect: yesterday's light, today's technology

Real Nixie tubes appeared in the late 1950s: ten digit-shaped cathodes stacked in a neon-filled glass bulb, glowing orange under about 170 volts of electricity. They were found in frequency meters, laboratory calculators, and control panels before being dethroned by seven-segment displays and then liquid crystal screens. Their production has almost ceased, making originals rare, expensive, and fragile.

This clock does not use real Nixie tubes, and it wears that proudly. In this type of clock, LEDs illuminate the digits housed in each transparent tube: the selected digit lights up while the others remain subtle, creating a sense of depth. You get the depth and floating glow of the original displays, with the advantages of modern electronics: low USB voltage, no gas, no wearing-out cathodes, and the ability to change colors.

An object you build before watching it

There is something deeply satisfying about assembling an object yourself that you will look at every day. Opening the box, the six capsules lined up, the wooden base waiting for its tubes: FILAMENT starts like a tiny miniature watchmaker's workshop and ends as a full-fledged decorative object.

The solid wood, left in its light hue, complements the transparency of the tubes. During the day, you notice the material and geometry most: six regular cylinders, aligned like measuring instruments. In the evening, the light takes over, and the digits seem to float in a void, much like the displays that once equipped laboratories and control rooms.

It is also the most compact of our Nixie-effect clocks: while our walnut model embraces the large retro format, FILAMENT prioritizes lightness and the joy of assembly, perfect for a creative person's desk, a student's room, or a collector's shelf.

Assembly and setup in 4 steps

1
Unpack and identify. Place the wooden base on a flat surface and take out the six tube capsules, the digit card, the USB cable, and the screwdriver. Note the assembly order indicated in the manual.
2
Install the tubes. Attach each tube to its slot according to the manual, without forcing or over-tightening the screws: wood and transparent parts don't like stress.
3
Plug in via USB. Connect the provided cable to a computer USB port or a wall USB charger (not included). The digits will light up in orange.
4
Set and customize. Set the time and date using the controls described in the manual, then choose the lighting color and the displayed function: time, date, or timer.

Good to know: the Nixie effect of this clock is obtained by LEDs illuminating digits placed inside transparent tubes. There is therefore no neon gas or high voltage: the clock operates on low-voltage USB, like a phone or a desk lamp. This is also what allows for the switch from traditional orange to RGB colors.

Tip: for a glow that truly resembles the original displays, keep it orange and place the clock in front of a dark background, a row of books, or a painted wall. In a dimly lit room, the digits seem to float. In the evening, a wall USB charger avoids having to leave a computer on to power it.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Nixie tubes?

No, and we prefer to say it clearly. Real Nixie tubes are neon-filled glass bulbs whose digit-shaped cathodes light up under a voltage of about 170 volts. They are almost no longer manufactured. This clock reproduces their aesthetic with LEDs that illuminate digits placed in transparent tubes. The visual result is very close, with that orange glow that seems to float, but the operation is much simpler: low USB voltage, no gas, no cathode wear, and the ability to change colors. It is a choice of comfort and safety for daily use.

Is assembly difficult?

No. The clock is delivered as a simple kit: the wooden base accommodates the six tube capsules, and a screwdriver is provided. There is no soldering or wiring to perform based on the contents provided: it is about installing the tubes into their spots by following the manual. Expect a few minutes, working on a clean, flat surface. We advise against over-tightening the screws to preserve the wood and transparent parts. Assembly can be done by a teenager with supervision; small parts must remain out of reach of young children during the operation.

How is the clock powered?

The clock runs on an external USB power supply using the included cable. You can plug it into the USB port of a computer, a monitor, or a classic wall USB charger, like those used for phones; this charger is not included. It does not run on batteries and does not contain a battery: it must therefore remain plugged in to display the time. As the retention of the time after a power outage is not specified by the manufacturer, plan to check the setting if you unplug it to move it.

What functions does it offer?

Three functions share the display on the six tubes. The time, of course, in hours, minutes, and seconds. The date, to keep an eye on the calendar without taking out your phone. And a timer, practical for pacing a work session, monitoring a tea steep, or timing a challenge between friends. Timekeeping is entrusted to a real-time clock (RTC) chip, a dedicated component that ensures good consistency. The details of the adjustment controls and switching between functions are given in the manual provided with the clock.

Can you change the color of the digits?

Yes. By default, the digits light up in a warm orange, the iconic hue of the original Nixie displays. Since the lighting is provided by RGB LEDs, the clock can also display different colors, allowing you to match it to mood lighting, a gaming desk, or simply the mood of the moment. The manufacturer does not disclose the exact list of available shades; the manual details the process for switching between colors. For an authentic vintage rendering, we recommend keeping it orange, which is particularly elegant with the light wood of the base.

How does it differ from your other Nixie-effect clocks?

We offer three Nixie-effect clocks with distinct personalities. FILAMENT is the most compact (237 mm, 385 g) and the only one delivered as a DIY kit, on a light solid wood base, featuring time, date, and a timer. Our oval base clock comes in wood effect, black, or white and focuses on animated light effects (rainbow, breathing, gradient). Finally, our large walnut model, 33 cm long, cultivates a retro workshop look with its orange digits. Choose FILAMENT if you enjoy the pleasure of assembly and small formats.

How do I maintain the clock?

Maintenance is minimal. Unplug the USB cable first, then dust the tubes and base with a dry, soft cloth, such as microfiber. Avoid household cleaners, alcohol, and sprays, which could dull the transparent parts or mark the wood. For the base, an occasional wipe with a cloth very lightly treated with wood oil can revive the shade, avoiding any contact with electronic parts. Place the clock away from direct sunlight, humidity, and heat sources, which can cause the wood to warp and alter the legibility of the digits.
