The material
Matte ceramic, a medium for delicate relief
The ceramic is molded in clay, then fired at a high temperature to become hard and durable. It allows for precise relief modeling, such as the face of the Sleepy Head, whose nose bridge and brow bones are drawn in slight volume.
The matte finish softens the color and lets the relief play with light: depending on the lighting, the shadows of the nose and brows deepen or fade, and the face seems to change expression throughout the day. The fine gold line of the eyelids adds a subtle contrast and a refined touch to the whole.
