Everything you need to know

Pack of 3 27 designs 3D Metal Two pieces of metal intertwined, one question: how to separate them? DÉDALE brings together a collection of metal disentanglement puzzles, these brain teasers where you have to free a ring, open a cage or release a ball without ever forcing. Each design is crafted from metal alloy and worked in volume, in shades of silver, golden brass, copper or bronze, and even black for one of them. You create a pack of 3 puzzles of your choice from 27 designs: entwined hearts, openwork cages, knots, lock, ladder, ball pyramid or disk with interlocking pieces. The three designs are chosen from the menus placed under the add to cart button, each with its difficulty level indicated in parentheses: so you can pair an easy, a medium and a difficult one, or take three of the same for an even-handed challenge. It's all about observation: spot the sliding piece, understand the angle that lets the ring through, then retrace the path in reverse to put everything back together. Designed as an adult puzzle, recommended from 14 years old, DÉDALE naturally finds its place on a desk, within reach between two meetings, on a shelf or on the living room table. It's also a gift that makes the rounds: with three puzzles, everyone takes theirs around the table, then you swap and the challenge begins again.

A metal brain teaser

Disentanglement puzzles: an old mechanical enigma

Disentanglement puzzles are among the oldest mechanical logic games. The baguenaudier, made of rings threaded on a rod, was already described in Europe in the 16th century. The principle has never changed: two or more pieces are intertwined in such a way that they seem inseparable, while a precise path allows them to be freed. That's the whole point: the solution is not guessed, it is discovered by manipulating.

DÉDALE designs are crafted from metal alloy. Metal gives the pieces their rigidity: they do not bend to cheat, and each passage must be found at the right angle. It also gives them their look, with silver, brass, copper or bronze shades and a black version, often combined on the same design to distinguish the pieces to separate.

The DÉDALE spirit

Finding the thread

In Greek mythology, Daedalus is the architect of the labyrinth of Crete, so well designed that its own creator had trouble getting out. Theseus only found the exit thanks to the Ariadne's thread, unrolled step by step through the corridors.

A metal puzzle works the same way. The pieces appear locked, the rings prisoners, the ball permanently trapped. Then, by observing, a movement emerges, an angle is revealed, and everything comes apart at once, almost effortlessly.

This is the moment we wanted to offer with DÉDALE: the one where you finally understand. And the pleasure does not stop there, because you then have to put everything back together, and entrust it to someone else.

How to solve a disentanglement puzzle

The four-step method

1
Observe: place the puzzle in front of you, spot the piece to free and photograph the starting position to find it again.
2
Explore: slide, turn and tilt each piece without haste, to spot the possible passages and the blocking points.
3
Do not force: if a piece blocks, go back; the solution always involves a precise angle, never force.
4
Reassemble: once the pieces are separated, retrace the path in reverse to reassemble, then throw the challenge to a loved one.

Which families to pair?

Family The challenge Shades
Hearts Separate two nested shapes or free a cord Silver and gold
Cages and cylinders Open the envelope or free the trapped piece Gold, copper, silver, black
Rings and knots Free a ring or untie links Silver, gold, brass, bronze
Mechanical Free a lock, pieces on rails or a ladder Copper, silver, gold
Geometric Undo an assembly of interlocking pieces Silver, gold, three tones
Ball Free a ball or undo a ball pyramid Silver, copper

Good to know

Pack of 3 of your choice: each pack contains three puzzles, which you select from the 27 designs in the menus placed under the add to cart button. The same design can be chosen several times. The overall photos show several designs to show the extent of the collection, and some photos show the pieces separated to illustrate the disentanglement principle.

Tip: before starting, take a photo of the starting position. It will serve as a reference to reassemble the puzzle, or to put it back in place before offering it to someone else. And if you get stuck, put it down for a few hours: a fresh look is often enough to see the passage.

Precautions: puzzle recommended from 14 years old. It contains small pieces: do not swallow and keep out of reach of young children. Never force the pieces, you risk deforming them and making the solution impossible.

A gift that makes you think

An adult puzzle to give

For Christmas, a birthday, Father's Day or retirement, DÉDALE has the advantage of choice: create a trio in the image of the person, for example a heart for a discreet declaration, a lock for the handyman, a ball pyramid for the methodical mind, or an easy, a medium and a difficult one for a smooth progression. You give it, you see it pass from hand to hand, and everyone wants to try.

To create a gift around the brain teaser, pair it with another puzzle or a desk object from the collection. The four most elaborate designs in the range are gathered separately in the DÉDALE PREMIUM series.

Frequently asked questions

What is a metal disentanglement puzzle?
It is a mechanical brain teaser composed of two or more metal pieces, intertwined in such a way as to appear inseparable. The goal is to separate them, for example free a ring, open a cage or release a ball, without ever forcing or deforming the metal. A precise path always exists: you have to find it by observing the shapes and testing the possible movements. Once the pieces are freed, the second challenge consists of putting everything back together by retracing the path in reverse. It is this double movement that makes these puzzles so captivating, and makes it an object that you willingly pick up again.
How to choose your three designs from the 27?
The easiest is to start with the person to whom you are giving the pack, or your own tastes, then vary the families. The hearts (laced heart, double heart, heart padlock) lend themselves well to an affectionate gift. The mechanical designs, like the lock, rails or ladder, appeal to DIY enthusiasts. The cages and cylinders and the ball designs seduce methodical minds, while the geometric shapes, like the hexagon, star or disk, make beautiful objects placed on a desk. The photos in the gallery, and the thumbnail that appears for each chosen design, help you compare the shapes and shades before validating.
Which difficulty level to choose?
To help you choose, each design is classified in three levels: Easy, Medium or Difficult; this level is indicated in parentheses next to the name of each design in the pack menus. This classification remains indicative, because the perceived difficulty varies greatly from one person to another: some find the passage in a few minutes, others come back to it for several days. For a first time, the most pleasant is to mix the levels: an easy design to get the hang of it, a medium, then a difficult; for a seasoned enthusiast, aim for three difficult designs. What matters is the method: observe the piece to free, test each movement without haste, go back as soon as it blocks. If you get stuck, put the puzzle down and come back to it later with a fresh look. Patience remains the best ally: the solution never requires force, only the right angle at the right time.
Can you reassemble the puzzle after solving it?
Yes, and it is even the second half of the game. The pieces reassemble by retracing the reverse path of the one that allowed them to separate. It is often more delicate than it seems, because you have to remember the order of the movements. To make your task easier, take a photo of the starting position before starting, and possibly a few photos of the key steps. Once the puzzle is reassembled, it is ready to be offered to someone else: that is all the charm of these objects, which pass from one hand to another without ever losing their interest.
From what age can you play with DÉDALE?
DÉDALE puzzles are recommended from 14 years old. They are aimed first at teenagers and adults who like logic games and patience challenges. As they contain small pieces, especially for the ball or ring designs, they must not be swallowed and must remain out of reach of young children. Remember to put them away after use if children live in the house. For the rest, no particular knowledge is necessary: a little curiosity, attention and the desire to understand how the pieces articulate is enough to get started.
How do I put together my pack of 3 puzzles?
Below the add-to-cart button, three menus allow you to choose your puzzles one by one from the 27 designs. Each design is shown with its difficulty level in parentheses, for example "Laced Heart (easy)", and a thumbnail displays the selected design so you can check your selection at a glance. You can choose the same design two or three times, which is useful for a fair challenge between friends or colleagues, or on the contrary, combine three families and three difficulty levels. The pack always contains three metal puzzles; the group photos, which bring together many designs, show the full range of the collection. To give even more, simply add a second pack to your cart.
Is DÉDALE a good gift idea for an adult?
It is a gift that works particularly well for adults who like to understand how things work. It keeps both hands and mind busy, looks lovely on a desk, and almost always sparks the curiosity of those around. The pack of 3 allows you to tailor the gift to the person, or share it: a heart for a loved one, a lock or a ladder for a handyman, a geometric shape for a fan of graphic objects, or three puzzles to fight over after dinner. It is suitable for Christmas, a birthday, Father's Day, or a retirement, and can complement another item from the puzzles and desk collection.
